Sauerbraten (Cube 2)

Sauerbraten is a freeware first person shooter that can be played in multiplayer or single player modes. My first impressions were excellent, the game is pure eye candy - especially for a freeware game. However, when you first start the game you are dropped into a map (Episode 1) with no monsters, no other players, no exits, no nothing. You have to bring up the menu for more advanced options - the menu itself even looked nice, it just hoovers in 3D space.

Being a FPS fan I was right at home, the game was responsive and pretty immerse right away. The in-game music is some pretty decent thrash metal which really sets the mode. I actually found the game fairly difficult in single player mode - not enough ammo by far. But there is a wide array of weapons at your disposal and an array of bad guys to bring the smackdown to. Small negative - having enemies run blindly toward you is a little 1990's.

Eye Candy.

Summary:

Bring the smackdown, ignore the badly designed UI.
